Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has heaped praise on team mate Andrew Robertson and tipped him to become Reds captain in the future.

The Scotland skipper has been hugely impressive at Anfield over the past year or so, and Van Dijk expects him to go to the very top on Merseyside.

“If he keeps improving he will [captain Liverpool],” he told BBC Scotland. “He’s already a leader. You don’t need an armband to be a leader for this team.

“He’s doing very well, he’s made incredible steps in his career and he just needs to keep doing what he’s doing,” the Dutchman finished.

OPINION

Robertson has achieved so much in a short space of time since moving to Liverpool that it would surprise no one if he ended up wearing the armband for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Jordan Henderson obviously has the captaincy at the moment and doesn’t look set to give it up for a few years more, while Van Dijk would be the obvious candidate to replace the England international once he’s no longer captain. However, Robertson would seem to be the next choice, and he would be an excellent candidate. He is already his country’s skipper at just 24 years of age, demonstrating what a natural leader he is, and it would make sense for him to eventually take over at Anfield as well. He seems to be one of those quieter types who leads by example as opposed to screaming at his team mates. He gets on with his job and he does it well – that commands respect from his fellow players. We’ll have to wait and see whether Van Dijk’s prediction comes true in the coming years.
