Graeme Souness wrongly suggested that when Liverpool signed Fabinho in the summer they hadn’t actually provided Jurgen Klopp with an upgraded option in regards to his midfield.

The Sky Sports pundit shared following the Reds’ 1-0 win over Everton Sunday that he had doubts about whether the capture of Fabinho and Naby Keita had actually improved Klopp’s squad.

“I’m not sure if Fabinho and Naby Keita are an upgrade on what he’s already got,” said Souness on Sunday, as quoted by Sky Sports.

While there maybe should be some questions marks over Keita as he hasn’t overly proven he is better than the other options at Anfield despite having the tools to do so, there should be no doubt about the capture of Fabinho.

The Brazilian midfielder is head and shoulders above the Reds’ other defensive midfield options as it’s hard to see who Souness would rank above him.

Fabinho may have only made 10 appearances for the Reds so far, but in his outing against Red Star and the Toffees on Sunday, he dictated the tempo of the game and added a extra layer of protection over the club’s defence that no other midfielder in Klopp’s ranks seems to do.

The midfielder is a strong tackler of the ball and easy to see that his recruitment improves Klopp’s team in the middle park so signing him clearly provided an upgrade on the club’s previous options.

It’s bizarre that the Sky pundit made the comments after the win against the Toffees as in that match Fabinho submitted a MOTM-worthy display due to the way he kept the Toffees at bay.

The Brazilian was constantly charging down any danger and if he hadn’t had featured then the Reds’ may not have emerged victorious.

That performance alone was enough evidence to show why the signing of Fabinho shouldn’t be questioned as the player clearly proved Souness wrong ahead of the pundit even making the remarks.
