Liverpool legend John Aldridge has questioned whether there’s some conspiring from the Premier League going on at the Reds’ expense.

Manchester City play before Liverpool in all four Premier League weekends in March, and Aldridge claims there could be some foul play going on from the powers that be.

“You just don’t know and you can never categorically say that this change in fixtures for City to play first hasn’t been done on purpose to put more pressure on Liverpool,” he wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“It’s unlikely of course but use it as a motivational weapon – if there’s any conspiring going on then we take that and throw it straight back at them. City can keep on winning but as long as we do the same that can have a psychological effect on them too. It could actually work in our favour to break City if we keep on winning and we can use it as a positive.”

OPINION

This is bizarre from Aldridge, quite frankly. To even suggest that there might be a conspiracy going on, that the order of the fixtures was arranged to benefit City, is ridiculous. The fixture list was sorted a long time ago, before anyone knew for certain that it would be Liverpool and City going head to head for the title at this stage of the season. The Premier League don’t schedule the fixture list in order to benefit one team or the other, that just doesn’t happen. Besides, why would they not want Liverpool to win the league? They’re a fresh team who haven’t won the Premier League before and are a massive club globally. Surely a Reds title win would only benefit the Premier League? This is, honestly, absurd. Aldridge seems like he’s getting a bit paranoid and a bit worried about his team potentially throwing the league away down the stretch, so he’s come up with a narrative to defend them if things go wrong. But, no, there is no conspiracy against Liverpool.
