Liverpool first team duo Joel Matip and Adam Lallana could be sold in the summer due to concerns over their injury history, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper claims that both players could be set for the Anfield exit door come the end of the season, joining a number of others Reds expected to depart.

It is understood that Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno are both out of contract and don’t look like being granted extensions, while Divock Origi and Simon Mignolet will likely leave in search of first team football.

The concern with both Matip and Lallana isn’t football-based, merely relating to their inability to stay fit for long periods of time at Anfield.

OPINION

You can’t blame Liverpool for taking this stance with these two players. Neither Lallana nor Matip have been reliable contributors to Jurgen Klopp’s side in recent years because they simply haven’t been able to stay fit. Both are talented players on their day, but their usefulness ceases when they continually fail to make it onto the field of play. It looks like the Reds will be competing on multiple fronts for many years to come and so Klopp needs players he can rely upon. Neither Lallana nor Matip have shown that they can be that for him. The German clearly likes them both as players, he has utilised them as much as could reasonably be expected in the circumstances, but at some point you need to cut the cord. There likely won’t be too many sad faces on Merseyside if these two players move on in the summer. It’s a shame, but that’s just the way it is.
