Liverpool are keeping close tabs on Birmingham City starlet Romello Mitchell, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper report that the Reds are among several Premier League and Championship clubs mulling an offer for the 16-year-old, who has been in prolific form for the Blues youth sides.

The Mail claim that Liverpool had scouts watching him in action as he scored for Birmingham in a 2-1 defeat for their Under-16s against Sheffield Wednesday.

OPINION

It is obviously still very early days in Mitchell’s career, and the 16-year-old has a lot of developing to do, but he is on track to become a real star for Birmingham. Liverpool have clearly recognised that talent through their extensive scouting of the striker, and would like to give him the chance to continue his development at Anfield. Such a move would be a clever one at this point in his career, with a deal for Mitchell only to get more and more expensive as the years go on. Luring him to Merseyside at such a young age gives the club the chance to help him develop in their own way, and could see them produce a future star for a minimal cost. Obviously the capture of Mitchell is not a foregone conclusion, with rivals Manchester United also known to be keeping tabs on the 16-year-old, and Liverpool must make their move soon if they want to avoid a bidding war.
