Liverpool are to target a new defensive midfielder in the January transfer window amid recent injury concerns, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reports on their website that Jurgen Klopp’s ever-growing injury list – with the latest casualty being right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold – means that the recruitment team are scouring the market for a verastile defensive midfielder who is available as soon as possible.

The report adds that the player must be able to adapt to playing in the defence as well as the middle of the park, but they are only willing to do it at a low cost, be that on loan, on a free transfer or for a cheap price.

OPINION

It is no surprise in the slightest that Liverpool are on the look out for a defensive midfielder in this current window. Klopp has a high number of injuries to his defence in particular, so it is obvious that reinforcements are needed. He has had to use midfielder Fabinho in the centre of defence lately, and although the Brazilian has coped rather well with the challenge that has been thrown his way, playing in the centre-back role is not something that comes naturally to him. This is why Klopp is looking for a midfelder who can ideally play in both positions in order to cover the current injuries. Their title bid could take a huge hit if their defensive chaos is not sorted soon, as Klopp is going to have to turn to some second string players. They must find a defensive midfielder soon, in order to have the depth they need to stretch away from Manchester City in the title race.
