Daniel Sturridge has responded to speculation surrounding his Liverpool future, claiming that is only concern is winning a trophy with the club.

The 29-year-old, reportedly on £120k-a-week, is out of contract at Anfield in the summer, and has started just six times in all competitions for the Reds so far this season, leading to speculation that he could leave Merseyside, as reported in Sports Illustrated.

Speaking on BBC Radio One Extra, as quoted by the Daily Mail, however, the England international suggested that his main priority lies in securing success for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

He said: “I’m staying focused on right now. You’ve got to live in the present, you can never live in the future.

“I’ve been at Liverpool a long time and I’m happy too. I want to try and help bring the team some success, to win a trophy with them would be amazing.

“We’ve come close before, finals, almost won the Premier League before, but we didn’t quite do it.”

OPINION

Sturridge has been a great asset to Liverpool over the years, but he must know as well as anybody that his time at the club is surely coming to an end. The striker has looked so fragile in recent seasons, and he has been starved of so much opportunity so far this season, that it’s hard to see any way for him to fight his way back into regular contention, especially with the Reds’ attack performing so well as it is. At 29, he still has so much to give, and if he has any kind of ambition, he will push for a move as soon as possible to get his career back on track. For now, however, full credit to him for taking such a professional stance and for pledging to do his utmost to bring a trophy to Anfield. How much influence he has on that remains to be seen, but with the potential for injuries and fatigue, the one time hero of the Kop could still have a part to play before his inevitable exit.
