One of the more surprising January transfer reports relating to Liverpool emerged on Monday as the club were linked with a swoop for former youth star Conor Coady.

Coady, who is now captain and star man at Wolves, has been mightily impressive upon his return to the Premier League, with the 25-year-old being an ever-present for the newly-promoted side this season.

The Daily Mail report that the Reds have been monitoring the Liverpool-born centre-back, who came through their academy before leaving in 2014.

While that is not necessarily an outlandish claim, it still seemed a strange one considering the fact that Jurgen Klopp is not struggling for options at centre-back.

Bringing back Coady now would be a pretty pointless exercise for both the Reds and the player himself, with the 25-year-old likely to just sit on the bench at Anfield.

Luckily it seems as though common sense has prevailed, with Sky Sports [16:18] now reporting that a return to Anfield is highly unlikely for Coady.

Sky claim that they have been informed that reports of such a move are wide of the mark, with sources reporting that a return to his boyhood club is off the cards.

This is good news for both Liverpool and Coady, with neither party looking quite right for each other at the moment despite the undeniable connection.

Liverpool would be signing a player who would likely prove not quite good enough to force his way into the starting team, with money simply wasted on his return.

More importantly, Coady would be sold a dream of a return to Anfield before things would likely turn sour with him not able to get many minutes behind the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

All in all this is the right outcome, and both can move on without any damage done.
