Amazingly, Lazar Markovic is still a Liverpool player.

The Serbia international arrived at Anfield with a lot of expectation behind him having broken through at Benfica, with the club paying £20million for his services.

Things just have not worked out at all for the 24-year-old on Merseyside though, with the winger making just 34 appearances for the club in four-and-a-half seasons.

Despite his failure to make an impact at Liverpool, Markovic has amazingly remained a Reds player, with two loan spells at Hull City and Anderlecht failing to lead to a permanent exit.

This season Markovic has been training and playing with the academy, and with his contract coming to an end in the summer, an exit is finally nigh.

According to ESPN, Liga MX champions Club America are now interested in a deal for the Liverpool forward.

It is not made clear whether such a deal would be a loan or a permanent switch, but Liverpool must try and make sure it is the latter.

Any deal will have to go through by Thursday, which is the Mexican transfer deadline, so there is a lot of work to do.

However, there is literally no point in keeping Markovic around any longer, with the Serbia international just collecting his wages and offering nothing in return.

His presence is not necessarily an issue for the Reds, but the sooner they get rid of him the better, and all parties can then move on.

The fact is that they are not going to get a big fee for Markovic, with that £20million plus his £35,000-a-week wages [Spotrac] basically a write off.

The club must do whatever needs to be done to seal a switch to Club America, even if that means letting him leave on a surprise free transfer.
