Liverpool have failed in a £61million bid for Napoli talisman Lorenzo Insigne, according to Napoli Repubblica.

The Italian news outlet claims that Jurgen Klopp’s team submitted a big money offer to the Serie A giants, but that Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis rejected it out of hand.

It is thought that Carlo Ancelotti’s side will demand at least £131million for the Italian international. Insigne excelled this season, scoring 11 times and registering six assists in 27 games in all competitions.

The 27-year-old attacker’s agent Mino Raiola is eager on the move and is looking for ways to facilitate it.

OPINION

This is interesting. Raiola is one of football’s premier super-agents so there’s no surprise that he is looking for a way to earn a bit of commission off Insigne. Liverpool have been sporadically linked with the Italian for some time now but nothing has ever really looked close to happening. He is a wonderful player, there’s no doubt about that, but you question whether the Reds need him at this moment in time. They are hugely blessed going forward with their incredible front three, supported this season by Xherdan Shaqiri. Then you have Harry Wilson who will return to Anfield this summer having excelled at Derby County. So there are already several pieces to fit into this Liverpool attack even without Insigne. Obviously he would be a sizeable upgrade on both Shaqiri and Wilson, but whether he’d break into the starting front three is doubtful. Plus, £131million for a player who’s not a guaranteed starter, come off it.
