John Aldridge has suggested that Mo Salah is key to Liverpool’s title challenge.

The Egyptian went into the international break off the back of a seven game goal drought, but former Reds man Aldridge has argued that the midseason pause could see him come back refreshed and ready to go.

Speaking to the Echo, he said: “He’s had a couple of weeks off which he probably needed to clear his mind and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get among the goals at Anfield against Spurs on Sunday.

“We will have to wait and see how he responds to a recent holiday and some well-earned time off away from the game, but I think we will know within half an hour on Sunday.

“The break means he’s had time to get the seven-game drought out of his system and forget about it. He needs a goal. He gets a goal and he will go on a run.

“If he comes back refreshed and ready from the break then he is the one who can push Liverpool to their first title in 29 years.”

OPINION

Salah has been uncharacteristically wasteful in front of gal in recent weeks, but thankfully Sadio Mane has stopped up to the plate to put in a series of goalscoring performances that have kept Liverpool in the hunt both domestically and on the European stage. That’s not to say Salah hasn’t been instrumental in helping this around him, but he is certainly lacking the lethal streak that made him so unplayable last season. You do get the impression that once h gets one goal, however, the floodgates will open. That could be vital for Liverpool in the run in. There are going to be a lot of tense, tetchy matches, and if they can rely on Salah to nick a goal here and there so that they can see out games 1-0, that could be difference between coming up short and a first league title in 29 years. There’s a lot riding on the Egyptian King, but he’s good enough to handle it.
