Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that Reds behemoth Virgil van Dijk should win the PFA Player of the Year award after his performance against Everton.

The Dutchman was faultless once again in his team’s goalless draw at Goodison Park, and Carragher feels he should now be nailed on to win the top prize.

“Van Dijk’s performance today was unbelievable,” he told Sky Sports. “I think he should be PFA Player of the Year. Maybe it’s too early for that, but today, if he’s not playing, I think Everton win the game.

“He looks like a man playing in a kids’ game. He’s playing against some of the top players in European football in the Premier League, but everything is so easy. You actually feel like he’s not getting tested enough. You still feel like there are more gears for him to go into.”

OPINION

Van Dijk is the obvious front runner for Player of the Year at this moment in time, you have to say. The former Southampton man has been absolutely irrepressible at the heart of the Liverpool defence and there is arguably no one player in the top flight who is as important to his team as Van Dijk is to the Reds. As Carragher says, Liverpool may well have lost on Sunday if Van Dijk hadn’t been playing – he makes that much of a difference. There really aren’t many other players that could be considered to have had superior seasons to him. The only other realistic candidates for the award would be his own team mate Alisson or Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero. Still, though, none of those stars have shone as brightly as the Netherlands international this campaign. There is no one who makes everything look as easy as Van Dijk does. He is, simply put, a colossus in Liverpool’s defence.
