There will have been many people watching the Merseyside derby on television on Sunday wondering just why the Everton players and supporters were so happy when the full time whistle blew.

It was because the Toffees felt that their goalless draw with Liverpool had put an end to their great rivals’ Premier League title bid, of course. However, there was one former Reds star who was less than impressed with the Everton fans’ antics.

“When Everton fans are celebrating that much for a point [it] shows how far behind they are,” John Arne Riise wrote on his personal Twitter account.

It’s hard to disagree with Riise’s point of view here, to be honest. If Everton had anything going on in their own season they wouldn’t be so ecstatic at grabbing a draw against Liverpool.

Instead, though, the blue half of Merseyside has been mired in mediocrity yet again under Marco Silva. Their rivals, meanwhile, are competing for the Premier League and Champions League – spot the difference?

Having said that, this is just how footballs fans are and it’s likely that the Liverpool supporters would have acted in exactly the same way had the roles been reversed – minus the mouthy ball-boy.

Still, the Liverpool fans will be pleased to see one of their former players, a cult hero no less, stick up for the team and fire a dagger at the Everton fanbase. Riise’s beloved status at Anfield is unlikely to diminish any time soon.
