Adrian Durham has claimed that Real Madrid will try and sign Virgil van Dijk now that Zinedine Zidane is back in charge.

The Frenchman returned to the Spanish giants this week after just nine months away from the club, and Durham believes that he will raid the Premier League to bolster his ranks.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the host said: “Who’s the best centre back in the Premier League? It’s Virgil van Dijk.

“Why on earth wouldn’t Real Madrid want to go for Virgil van Dijk? If Liverpool don’t win anything this season, what does Virgil van Dijk do? Is he thinking to himself, I’ll just stick around forever until we do win something?

“Or is he thinking what he was thinking at Celtic or Southampton? I think that’s a real concern for Liverpool.”

OPINION

This feels a little bit pie in the sky from Durham. It’s like he’s just asked himself who the best centre back in the league is, who the most famous club in the world are, and he’s just drawn a line between the two for the sake of it. There’s nothing to suggest that van Dijk is anywhere on Zidane’s radar, and the fee that would be demanded for his services would surely be absolutely astronomical. Van Dijk is adored at Anfield, and he will know that he is onto a  good thing on Merseyside. Even if the Reds don’t win a trophy this season, you wouldn’t bet against them doing so next time around, and van Dijk surely won’t jump ship so readily. There’s no doubting how good the Dutchman is, and it’s testament to how far he has come that Durham has singled him out as the best in the league with little to no discussion, but in terms of him leaving Liverpool any time in the near future, it seems unthinkable.
