Liverpool centre back Joel Matip produced arguably the finest performance of his Reds career on Wednesday night as Jurgen Klopp’s team overcame German giants Bayern Munich 3-1 at the Allianz Arena to progress to the quarter finals of the Champions League. Yes, he scored an own goal, but it really wasn’t his fault. He had to try and get the ball away otherwise it would have fallen to a Bayern man for a tap in – either way it’s the same result. Putting that one moment aside, though, and it becomes clear that the former Schalke star was in his element back in Germany. He, alongside the always-impressive Virgil van Dijk, absolutely bullied Robert Lewandowski, rendering one of the greatest strikers in world football virtually anonymous. Van Dijk’s influence on Matip has obviously been huge, but credit must still go to the Cameroon international for the way in which he has stepped up in recent months. He has been superb and this game was merely a continuation of that.
