Liverpool are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes, but face competition from some rival teams, according to A Bola.

The Portuguese outlet claims that the Reds are one of the teams interested in the Portugal international, along with Manchester United, Chelsea and AC Milan.

United are ahead of the rest here, it seems, having already made contact with the representatives of the 24-year-old. Fernandes’s release clause is said to be set at £86million.

Fernandes has enjoyed a phenomenal season for Marcel Keizer’s side, bagging 23 goals and 14 assists in 41 games.

OPINION

This is exactly the sort of signing that Liverpool need. The Reds are currently lacking a goalscoring, creative presence in midfield and Fernandes could fill that void for them. He is having one of the finest seasons in Europe and has become a superstar on the continent. That is the sort of player Liverpool should be looking at, particularly when they have a need at his position. His goalscoring record from midfield is simply ridiculous and it’s clear that he sets goals up as well as scores them – which is exactly what Jurgen Klopp’s team require at this moment in time. At 24 he is a good age as well, where he’s experienced but still has room to improve as he enters the peak years of his career. £86million is obviously a gargantuan amount, but hopefully there’s some room for negotiation there. However, United have grabbed the initiative here so it’s going to be difficult for Liverpool to get the job done.
