Virgil van Dijk has suggested that choosing whether Liverpool or Celtic fans sing You’ll Never Walk Alone better is looking trying to decide on a favourite child.

The Dutchman has become a firm fan favourite at Anfield after a wildly successful first year on Merseyside.

That admiration has been reciprocated by the defender, although he has admitted that he still holds a flame for the Hoops’ faithful as well.

Speaking in an interview with FourFourTwo magazine, when asked which set of fans sang their legendary anthem better, van Dijk replied: “Both. I can’t pick one, because that’s like choosing between your children.”

OPINION

The fact that van Dijk is so well-respected by the supporters of clubs that he has moved on from shows just how much the Dutchman brings to the team that he turns out for. He has been nothing short of incredible for Liverpool since signing from Southampton last January, and it is no great exaggeration to suggest that he is one of the best defenders in world football. The impact he has had on the Reds’ backline has been transformative, and it’s no surprise to hear the Kopites ringing his name out from the terraces already. The leadership and organisational skills that he boasts are next level, and it doesn’t bear thinking about what Jurgen Klopp’s side would have to do without him. The defender still has plenty of timeliest at the very top of his game, and with a long term contract stretching out in front of him, he will be hoping to become a lynchpin of this Liverpool side for years to come.
