Ex-Liverpool player Dominic Matteo has urged his former side to sign Real Madrid star Gareth Bale.

The £350,000-a-week Welshman [The Guardian] has cut a frustrated figure at times this season, and Matteo has encouraged the Reds to put an end to his Spanish adventure.

As quoted in the Daily Star, he said on Stadium Astro’s YouTube channel: “It would be a big signing. If he was coming back to England, I’m sure that everyone would take him.

“With Bale, when Madrid beat Liverpool in the final, he had that bit of X factor. Liverpool could maybe do with one more X factor player to score in the finals.

“That’s what we’ve lacked that bit of X factor to get us over the line.”

OPINION

This would be a huge, huge signing for Liverpool. Bale might have struggled to make the impression that was expected of him at times during his stay in La Liga, but there can be no doubting that he is still one of the most special players in world football. The Welshman can make something out of nothing, and possesses a rare gift for turning matches on their heads with a moment of pure magic. Whether the Reds would be interested in signing him, however, given their current plethora of attacking talents, and especially given his eye-watering contract demands, remains to be seen, but it’s still a very exciting prospect. You can’t help feeling that Bale will come back to England one day before calling time on his career, and there are a number of clubs who you would earmark as potential destinations. Liverpool would be high amongst those names, but things are never simple with a transfer of this magnitude.
