Mario Melchiot believes that Liverpool have wasted their opportunity to win the Premier League title this season, and thinks that Manchester City will “sprint away” in the race for the crown.

The Reds currently sit two points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side, but the Blues have a game in hand, and the former Chelsea full-back has argued that they will canter to victory when the season resumes.

Speaking to the Express, the Fox Sports pundit said:”I thought Liverpool was going to do it.

“They had all the capabilities, the distance was so far, I was like ‘this is the team to watch’.

“I like Klopp as a manager, it doesn’t mean I don’t like Pep Guardiola because he plays exceptional football.

“But I just like the motivation and passion that Klopp shows down the touchline, the reality of the game.

“Then they’ve slipped up so I now have to put my eggs with City and the way they’ve answered all the questions and the doubts, I think City might sprint away with this title.”

OPINION

Nobody’s sprinting anywhere with the title this season. It could well be that City edge out Liverpool when it comes down to it, but the winning margin for either side won’t be a chasm by any means, and this will easily be remembered as one of the best title races in modern times. Liverpool have been unlucky in some ways, because the gap they opened up at the start of the year, when City crashed to a couple of shock defeats, give the impression of a side that have since capitulated. The reality is, however, that City were always going to come back strong, and if it had been the other way around, with Liverpool storming back from that position, you still get the impression that people would be backing City to nick it. Perhaps that underdog status will suit Liverpool, but whatever the outcome, it’s going to be touch and go.
