Gary Lineker has blasted the decision to make Liverpool play on Sunday afternoon with the Reds in Champions League action next Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men make the trip to FC Porto in midweek to try and see out a 2-0 advantage in their quarter final clash, but Linker believes that their domestic schedule could be a hindrance to the Reds.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday afternoon, he said: “Crazy that both Liverpool and Manchester City play tomorrow.

“No other sides in Europe that are still in the Champions League would ever play on a Sunday before midweek CL fixtures.

“The Premier League needs to look after their own.”

OPINION

You have to say that Lineker is right about this one. The Reds hold a two goal advantage against Porto, and you would expect them to go and finish the job in Portugal in midweek. That’s entirely beside the point, however, and the powers that be must surely realise that disadvantage they are putting English teams at by forcing them to play so late in the weekend with European football to think about as well. like Lineker says, no other country would take such a lax view of things, and it really does make almost no sense whatsoever. It might not matter too much for Liverpool, but what about Manchester City and Tottenham? Spurs played on Saturday lunchtime, whereas City face Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon. That’s a difference of about 26 hours, which hardly seems fair when you consider what is at stake. The Premier League really need to reconsider the way they handle these things.
