Liverpool defensive duo Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson have been included in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week, as revealed by the Premier League’s official Twitter account.

The two players shone in the Reds’ crucial 2-1 victory over Tottenham on Sunday, and clearly did enough to earn Shearer’s approval.

Both defenders produced moments that were vital to Jurgen Klopp’s team securing all three points, Robertson assisting Roberto Firmino’s opener with a stunning cross and Van Dijk defusing a two-on-one opportunity for Spurs with the score at 1-1.

The Dutch and Scottish internationals are joined in Shearer’s team by the likes of Southampton duo Yan Valery and Nathan Redmond and Manchester City star Bernardo Silva.

OPINION

It’s no surprise to see these two Liverpool players, in particular, included in Shearer’s Team of the Week. They were both absolutely outstanding on Sunday, doing just enough to keep Spurs out for the majority of the game, while contributing in an offensive sense as well. Robertson was a menace down the left hand side of the pitch all game long and Kieran Trippier – who had another dreadful game – simply couldn’t handle him. The cross that the Scotsman put in for Firmino’s opener was about as good of a ball as you’ll see all season. He curled it beautifully away from the Tottenham defenders and right onto the head of the Brazilian – simply sublime. Van Dijk, on the other hand, produced a moment of pure defensive brilliance to cut off Moussa Sissoko’s pass to Son Heung-min and force the Frenchman to blast wildly over the bar with his weaker left foot. All in all, it’s hard to argue that these two don’t deserve their spot in Shearer’s good graces.
