Paul Merson has claimed that Tottenham should have won against Liverpool when they lost 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Toby Alderweireld’s own-goal in stoppage time left Spurs without a win in their last five Premier League fixtures and on the cusp of dropping out of the top-four, despite being talked about as potential title candidates as recent as early February.

Merson believes that Tottenham were the better team against Liverpool, but has suggested he was not surprised to see Jurgen Klopp’s men pick up all three points in the game.

“[Spurs] will be kicking themselves about the result at Anfield,” Merson said on the Sky Sports website. “There only looked like one winner as the game went on and, in the end, they lost the game.

“How many times have we said that about Spurs in the last year?”

OPINION

Liverpool got lucky on Sunday. Moussa Sissoko probably should have scored a winner for Spurs before Hugo Lloris’ mistake meant that Alderweireld scored an own-goal in stoppage time. However Liverpool were due a slice of luck, especially after what has been a testing few weeks for Klopp’s squad. They have kept themselves at the top of the table with that win over Spurs. Manchester City can overtake the Reds on Wednesday when they play their game in hand against Cardiff, but there are still games where the title can be won or lost for both them and the Merseyside club. Winning it so late against Spurs will be nothing but a massive boost for Liverpool and they can very much win their first Premier League title this season. Everyone says that when teams win games without playing well then they usually end up being champions. Liverpool’s recent form could be an indicator of that.
