Liverpool are set to begin talks with defender Joel Matip over a new deal, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football site reports that the Reds are keen to reward the 27-year-old for his excellent form since filling in for centre-back Joe Gomez during his long-term injury this season.

His current contract ends in June 2020, and Liverpool want to give Matip a new deal that would replace that contract.

The £100,000-a-week [Spotrac] player will have to consider whether to accept this new offer that could come his way, or snub it and depart the club.

OPINION

Liverpool would be very wise to give Matip a new deal before it comes to an end next year. At the beginning of the season, he was down the pecking order for a place in the line-up due to the emergence of Gomez’ partnership with Virgil Van Dijk. However, since his injury, Matip has filled in admirably. He has been picked ahead of Dejan Lovren on numerous occasions, and it now remains to be seen whether Gomez will be able to usurp him from the spot that he has now virtually made his own. The defender was one of the best players on the pitch on Sunday against Cardiff, so it is no surprise that the club are now willing to extend his deal. They will certainly hope and pray that he will accept the offer that could come his way, as he has been brilliant this term.
