ESPN pundit Steve Nicol wants Liverpool to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham in the summer, claiming that the Belgium international would form a “great” centre-back partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

Alderweireld, 30, is widely expected to leave North London in the next transfer window, with a £25million release clause active in his contract that expires at the end of next season.

Liverpool legend Nicol is adamant that the defender will leave Tottenham in the summer and although he is none the wiser as to where he ends up, he hopes he will find his way to Anfield.

“One hundred per cent this guy’s going,” said Nicol, as quoted by the Daily Star.

“We just don’t know where it is.

“Again, this is a player who I think most teams in the world would want as their centre-back.

“I wouldn’t mind him at Liverpool alongside Van Dijk, I think that would be a great pairing.”

OPINION

Alderweireld might have scored an own goal that won Liverpool the game against Tottenham on Sunday, but the Belgian centre-back would be an amazing signing for the Reds if they do manage to snap him up in the summer. As good as the ex-Ajax ace would be for Liverpool, there’s little chance that they would actually be able to sign him. Nicol is right to say that Alderweireld is expected to leave Spurs in the summer, but he is bound to head to a team that guarantees silverware every season. Right now, Liverpool don’t do that, while a team like Barcelona, Real Madrid or even Manchester City would be a better bet for him. He’s won nothing in North London, and never will unless Spurs somehow win the Champions League this season. He won’t go from them to join Liverpool when Jurgen Klopp is not guaranteeing success for his players either.
