Christian Benteke has taken to Twitter to pledge his support to former club Liverpool in this year’s Champions League final.

The Reds booked their place in the showpiece event in Madrid on June 1st with a stunning 4-0 victory over Barcelona on Tuesday, and will face Tottenham after Mauricio Pochettino’s men pulled off a similarly remarkable comeback against Ajax on Wednesday night.

And Belgian striker Benteke, who spent a season at Anfield in 2015/16, has been eager to point out where his loyalties lie.

Writing on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday evening, he said: “Never seen a set of semi finals like that ever!

“I’d only just got my head around last night!

“I know who I’ll be supporting in the final! #YNWA”

OPINION

This says a lot about Liverpool as a club. Benteke was only there a year, didn’t really make too much of an impression, and was shipped out to Crystal Palace at the first opportunity, but still feels enough of an affinity with the Reds to pledge his support on social media. There seems to be something special about Anfield, about playing in front of the Kop. It’s almost as if it infects players with a bug, one that doesn’t ever really leave them. Perhaps that explains the levels of passion and dedication we are seeing from this current squad. To come back from 3-0 down against Barcelona is nothing short of awe-inspiring, and proves once and for all that Jurgen Klopp has built a properly world class team on Merseyside. Benteke wasn’t able to take his chance to play a part in that, but you can bet that he will be rooting for the Reds on June 1st, as will every player who ever played for them.
