Liverpool have missed out on pocketing £5million from Barcelona, due to a clause in the contract of Philippe Coutinho not being met after the Reds knocked the Spanish sides out of the Champions League, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper report that a clause inserted into Coutinho’s contract following the Brazilian’s move to Barcelona in January 2018, would have guaranteed Liverpool a seven-figure fee of £5million if the La Liga champions had gone onto win this season’s Champions League.

Klopp’s side beat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday to secure their place in the Champions League final, where they will meet fellow Premier League side Tottenham, and will therefore not get the money they would have got had Ernesto Valverde’s side knocked the Reds out and gone onto to lift the trophy.

Missing out on the money they would have got from Barcelona if they had gone onto win the Champions League final, will not bother Liverpool one bit as they prepare to face Tottenham in the final and go one better than last season. The Reds were beaten in last season’s final by Barcelona’s rivals Real Madrid, but will now hope to take Tuesday’s form into the final in Madrid. However, had Liverpool not produced the dramatic comeback that they managed to pull off in the second leg of the semi-final, they would have had the opportunity of a consolation of the £5million they could have got from the clause in Coutinho’s contract. The Brazilian was taken off during the second half, as Valverde looked to add some more stability to his during a hectic period in Tuesday’s semi-final, which sort of sums up how Coutinho’s move to Spain has gone, with the Reds moving on to challenge from major honours and the Brazil international struggling to convince some at the La Liga side.
