Tony Cascarino has revealed that he would love to have James Milner over for dinner.

The pundit made the admission during an end of season review for the Times in which he was asked to name his fantasy Premier League dinner party lineup, and made the Liverpool veteran his first pick.

Milner has built a reputation for being something of a mundane character – a joke that he himself has gotten in on in recent years by playing up to the suggestion.

When asked the question, Cascarino said: “James Milner, João Moutinho, Juan Mata, Ederson”.

OPINION

Interesting choice from Cascarino. To be fair to Milner, he is a good sport, and he has really taken on this “boring” tag and made it his own. His droll approach to everything, often egging on those around him, has made him a firm favourite at Anfield, and he has built himself an unlikely cult status in the English game. In essence, he has become a parody of himself, and it’s brilliant. That being said, what is Cascarino thinking with his lineup. With the suave Iberian sophistication of Juan Mata and Joao Moutinho, and the South American sizzle of Ederson, poor Milner would stick out like a saw thumb with his down to earth Yorkshire ways and his cup of tea. You do get the impression that there is a surprising amount of complexity to Milner, however, and that he is the sort of person that it is almost impossible to dislike.
