Gary Lineker has praised Liverpool on the final day of the Premier League season as they fell just short of the title at the hands of Manchester City.

The Reds defeated Wolves 2-0 at Anfield, but it wasn’t quite enough in the end, as Pep Guardiola’s City side were the 4-1 victors at the Amex Stadium as they faced Brighton.

Lineker took to his social media to congratulate both sides on their Premier League campaigns and revealed he found it extraordinary that Liverpool had only lost one game in the league this season.

In a post from his personal Twitter account, Lineker said: “Congratulations to @ManCity on being the first club to retain the Premier League title for 10 years. A simply magnificent season.

“Congratulations too to @LFC. To finish 2nd on 97 points with only one defeat is extraordinary. A simply magnificent season.”

OPINION

Lineker has completely hit the nail on the head with this tweet. Both Liverpool and Manchester City have been unbelievable all season long, and been almost faultless in their respective efforts to bring the Premier League trophy home. Although the Reds once again have failed to taste glory in the top division, they were so, so close to doing just that. Their only defeat of the season at the hands of Manchester City has proven to be the most important point of the season in hindsight, and has made sure that it was City who lifted the trophy, and not Liverpool. Putting that thought aside, Klopp’s men have still had a surreal season, especially considering there is still the possibility of European glory in the Champions League. The club will no doubt be proud of what they have achieved this season, but unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to win the Premier League title, as the final day concluded.
