OPINION
Liverpool revealed on their official Twitter account on Sunday that Reds centre back Virgil van Dijk had scooped the coveted Premier League Player of the Year award. It’s not quite the PFA Player of the Year award, but it’s a decent gong to get despite that. You’d rather have it than not, that’s for sure. Either way, the imperious Dutchman absolutely deserves it. He has been phenomenal for Jurgen Klopp’s team this campaign, redefining what it means to be a centre half for many viewers. We have seen some tremendous central defenders in the Premier League over the years, but this might be the most dominant season any of them have had from Van Dijk. He’s so well-rounded, with so few perceptible weaknesses that he leaves opposition strikers with very little belief that they can do anything to upset him. So while the likes of Sadio Mane, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva have all also enjoyed exceptional campaigns, Van Dijk has undoubtedly been the Premier League’s finest player this season.

What an outstanding achievement, when was the last time a central defender won this? John Terry?
