Liverpool are plotting a surprise summer move for Tottenham Hotspur centre back Davinson Sanchez, according to Don Balon.

The Spanish outlet claims that the Reds want to pair the 6ft 1in Colombian [Source: Transfermarkt] with Virgil van Dijk at the heart of their defence, having been unconvinced by Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t want the former Ajax man to leave, but if someone comes in with an offer of £52million then Tottenham will be forced to sell.

The 22-year-old has struggled for game time of late, with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen locking down the starting spots at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

OPINION

This is a bit of a shock, isn’t it? Sanchez’s name has never really been associated with Liverpool, so for the club to suddenly be ready to make a move for him is quite a departure. It’s also a surprise that the Reds haven’t been convinced by Matip, with the Cameroonian having enjoyed a phenomenal second half of the season at Anfield. For them to be ready to replace him after the form he’s been in is a real surprise. However, Sanchez appears to be someone that Jurgen Klopp is keen on. You have to wonder why, though. The Colombian international hasn’t exactly enjoyed a stellar season in north London, so to then pay £52million for him seems a bit much. Obviously he’s still a young man so you’d be buying potential as well as how good he is now, but this doesn’t seem like something that’s actually going to happen. Liverpool are unlikely to spend this much on one player this summer by all accounts, so don’t expect Sanchez to be wearing a red shirt any time soon.
