Alan Shearer has named five Liverpool players in his Premier League team of the year.

The Premier League legend picked out Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Sadio Mane as part of his side, completed by five Manchester City players and Eden Hazard of Chelsea.

Shearer also delivered his verdict on each player, and gave a particularly glowing review of Alexander-Arnold.

As posted on the Premier League’s official Twitter account, he said: “Such has been Alexander-Arnold’s form, I couldn’t leave him out with his assists.

“It’s a forward’s dream having those crosses every week.”

OPINION

Shearer has named five players here, but honestly, he could have named just about any of Liverpool’s squad this season and it would have been justified. The fact that Alisson Becker and Mo Salah, for instance, have been omitted, should tell you all you need to know about the standard of the competition Liverpool have come up against this season, and if it wasn’t for this imperious Manchester City side, the Reds would probably have had 10 or 11 players in Shearer’s side. The fact that the Reds have managed to keep pace with City, despite their superhuman achievements, is real testament to the quality in Jurgen Klopp’s team, and the hope now will be that they are able to build on this success and go again, even better, next season. Liverpool deserve a title, and with this squad at his disposal, it is surely only a matter of time before Klopp can help deliver one to Anfield.
