South American football expert Tim Vickery has suggested that a return to Liverpool could be a potential destination for Barcelona attacker Philippe Coutinho this summer.

Coutinho joined Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018, but he has somewhat failed to live up to his impressive form at Anfield, where he scored 41 goals in 152 appearances, and the Brazilian has found himself failing to complete the full 90 minutes in some of the Spanish side’s most important games.

Barcelona signed the Brazilian for around £142million so any potential deal would likely cost the buying the club a lot of money, with the Spanish champions not wanting to take too much of a hit on Coutinho if they sell him this summer.

Vickery has revealed that Barcelona could potentially sell Coutinho if they recoup a large fee for the Brazil international, and believes that the Premier League is his most likely destination, with Liverpool and Tottenham two possible teams he could join, were he to be sold.

“The problem is Barcelona spent so much money on him; how much of a loss are they prepared to take to offload him? The most logical place for him would be the Premier League,” Vickery told Sky Sports as quoted on the broadcaster’s live Transfer Centre blog on Wednesday [11:15am].

“He did very well at Liverpool, and remember that relationship he had with Pochettino at Espanyol, is there a little light flashing there?”

OPINION

Vickery’s comments are interesting and could suggest that Coutinho could be sold by Barcelona this summer, with the fact that he played and performed so well for Liverpool meaning there would be an obvious link between the pair. However, Liverpool are thought to be unlikely to be wanting to invest huge amounts of money in the transfer market this summer, given the Reds gave spent heavily in previous windows to improve Jurgen Klopp’s squad. Therefore a move to re-sign Coutinho would probably be surprising especially considering how well the Reds have performed since the Brazilian left the club in 2018. Tottenham a s a potential destination is very interesting also, with the Brazil international having a good relationship with Pochettino, suggesting that he could even end at Liverpool’s Champions League final opponents. Coutinho will be hoping that wherever he is next term he will be given more of a starring role like he enjoyed during his time at Anfield.
