Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has suggested that he will not be spending massive amounts during the summer transfer window, after the Reds have shown good form throughout the campaign.

Liverpool finished runners-up to Manchester City in the Premier League title race, but with 97 points collected they achieved the most amount of points without the winning the title in the competitions history, and have also reached the Champions League final where they face Tottenham.

Klopp has now revealed that he does not think he needs to invest heavily in the squad again this summer, after Liverpool have made some significant additions over the course of the last few transfer windows.

“I don’t want to talk exactly what we will do, but I don’t think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money or whatever,” Klopp told the Liverpool Echo.

“The best way to do it is bring together a group of players, try to develop them altogether and then stay together for a while.”

“That was maybe the main problem of Liverpool for the last decade. When they had a good team after a season they went all over the world. That will not happen this year for sure.”

OPINION

Klopp is right to suggest that Liverpool do not need to make massive changes to their squad during the summer transfer window, with the Reds already demonstrating they have the players to mount challenges for both the Premier League and Champions League this season. The German is also right to highlight Liverpool’s past problems with keeping together successful sides in the last few years, with the Reds finishing runners-up in the Premier League under both Rafa Benitez and Brendan Rodgers, before selling key players and struggling in the following seasons. This time Liverpool must ensure that they keep hold of their current squad and they appear to be a position where they will be able to successfully do that. Rather than making more signings this summer Klopp will be better served to continue working to improve the players already at his disposal, while if the opportunity to add to his squad does emerge then that would be a bonus this summer. Liverpool are building something that could lead to a very successful period in the club’s history if they keep the squad together.
