Former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is keen on signing Reds right back Nathaniel Clyne this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the Eagles boss does want to bring the 28-year-old back to Selhurst Park, but that there remain doubts over whether he is a long-term answer at the position for Palace.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has swapped London for Manchester this summer, leaving Hodgson with a pressing need at right back, where Clyne could potentially be a solution for the former England chief.

The England international started his career with Palace, before moving to Southampton in 2012. Now, it appears, he could be set for a reunion with his old team.

OPINION

This is a move that would seem to make sense for all parties. Liverpool don’t need Clyne and would likely be open to allowing him to leave the club this summer. He spent the second half of the season on loan at Bournemouth and, while he provided solid service to Eddie Howe’s side, he didn’t blow anyone’s hair back. However, he showed enough to suggest that he can still be a decent player at Premier League level. Palace are clearly going to be in the market for a new right back. They lost one of the best young full backs in England in Wan-Bissaka, but they pocketed a pretty lump of cash in exchange for him. Signing Clyne would provide them with a solid replacement for the United star, while ensuring that they have plenty of the Red Devils’ money left to spend on other areas of the team. As for Clyne, he would surely love to return to Selhurst Park. That’s where he started his career and where he established himself as a talent to watch. This seems like it would be a win-win for everyone.
