Football fans are a bitter lot, aren’t we? Your team can achieve the greatest feats in the club game, can make history in the process, and yet it’s still made all the more sweeter by seeing a bitter rival fall flat on their face. That’s certainly the case with Liverpool fans and Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan was a hero on Merseyside during his spell at Anfield, hitting 82 goals in just 133 matches for the Reds. Even when he forced through a move to Barcelona there were still a fair number of fans who gave him the benefit of the doubt and who respected his desire to play for the biggest club in world football. His actions when his current employers met his former side in the Champions League semi-final this season did little to endear him to the remaining fans he had in the Kop, however. After scoring in the 3-0 first leg Barca win, the Uruguayan celebrated in typically enthusiastic fashion, and many fans felt it was a slight on the Reds, and just a tad disrespectful. What goes around comes around though, and the 32-year-old missed the penalty that ultimately cost his country a place in the Copa America semi-final on Saturday night. Olympic gold medallist hockey player and Liverpool super fan Samantha Quek was the first to express her joy at Suarez’s misfortune on Twitter, and a fair few Kopites jumped on the band wagon too. Whether it is a deserved reaction, however, is a different kettle of fish entirely.
