Liverpool have scouted Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek “a number of times”, according to Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan.

The Ajax midfielder enjoyed a stellar campaign for the Dutch side last season, helping them reach a Champions League semi-final and chalking up five appearances for the Netherlands.

And van der Kraan believes that he could be on the move this summer.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the journalist said: “If I had to put my money on a player leaving, it would be Donny van de Beek.

“He is a perfect backup for many clubs. He is not the No 1 for most clubs – I have seen scouts from Tottenham, Man United, Everton, Liverpool and Newcastle at Ajax Amsterdam Arena watching him a number of times.

“He is an ideal player for the Premier League, he has the skills, like most Ajax players, and a big tank so he can run all day. But all these clubs have a priority list and Van de Beek seems the perfect backup for the big clubs.”

OPINION

This would be a fantastic move for Liverpool. Van de Beek has shown that he his a player with a bucket load of potential, and van der Kraan is surely right in suggesting that a move could be on the cards this summer. That Ajax side, so impressive in Europe last season, will no doubt attract a lot of attention during the transfer window, and you wouldn’t be surprised to see it picked right down to the bone. If that does happen, you would expect another barrage of fresh young talent to breakthrough in the next year or two anyway, but from a Liverpool perspective, snapping up van de Beek would be a great idea. He is a versatile and hard working midfielder, and would do a really decent job anywhere in that midfield three that Jurgen Klopp tends to employ. Furthermore, he is only likely to get better and better.
