Liverpool have tabled a bid worth £40.2million for Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes, according to Correio da Manhã.

The Portuguese newspaper claims via their website that while Fernandes, 24, has attracted a lot of attention this summer, Liverpool are currently only club to come forward with a proposal.

Fernandes was in red-hot form for Sporting last season, scoring 32 goals and supplying 18 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions.

OPINION

Although Liverpool won the Champions League last season and came runners-up in the Premier League, many fans would agree that Jurgen Klopp needs to add to his midfield this summer. He does not need to overhaul his central options, he just needs one quality attacking midfielder who should have been signed when Philippe Coutinho left Anfield for Barcelona last year. If Liverpool had a player of that ilk in their side last season, who knows? They could have won the Premier League. Fernandes could be that player for Liverpool. The Portugal international has played in big occasions and won plenty of silverware. He can score goals, he can create goals and at 24, he still has plenty of years left to play. Liverpool’s bid for Fernandes is probably not enough to sign him, but it’s very encouraging that they are going after players like him. Klopp doesn’t need to do a lot this summer except for replace those who are leaving and sign a midfielder like Fernandes.
