OPINION
We’re just over halfway through June, but we may already have a winner for ‘most surprising transfer rumour’ of the window. Liverpool, champions of Europe and Premier League runners-up have been linked with Southampton full-back Matt Targett, a player who can’t even get into the first team at St. Mary’s on a regular basis. According to 90Min, the Reds are eyeing up the 23-year-old as potential cover for Andy Robertson, and even see him as a long term replacement for the Scottish international. Now, obvious jokes about Liverpool raiding Southampton aside, this move is a tad amusing. On the surface, it makes no sense for the Reds to swoop for a second string full-back who has failed to show any real sign that he will kick on and become a player capable of competing amongst the European elite. That being said, look who he would be deputising for. It’s a little (very, very widely) known fact that Robertson was plying his trade with Queen’s Park in the lower reaches of the Scottish league system just six years ago. Nobody in their right mind would have given him a chance of going on to become the player he has. Who knows, maybe Targett can emulate him.
