Liverpool are weighing up a swoop to sign Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claimed via their live transfer blog in the early hours of Sunday morning that Simon Mignolet is “set to leave” Anfield and Jurgen Klopp wants McCarthy, 29, to replace the out-going Belgian.

It is understood that Liverpool wanted the one-time England international last summer before they eventually signed Alisson from Roma, but now it seems as though Klopp has revived that interest ahead of next season.

OPINION

McCarthy is a very good goalkeeper and one who would surely be an upgrade on error-prone Mignolet. Southampton’s shot-stopper kept just four clean sheets in 25 Premier League appearances last season, but he was playing for a team that could have been relegated if it wasn’t for Ralph Hasenhuttl taking charge from Mark Hughes. After Hasenhuttl was appointed McCarthy lost his spot in the starting line-up so there is a good chance that the £50,000-a-week [Spotrac] goalkeeper will be on the move this summer. He is already a second-choice shot-stopper at St Mary’s, so would he be willing to go to Anfield and become a second-choice there? McCarthy is 29-years-old and has shown some great form in the last few seasons, so he might wait and see if a number one shirt comes up before the transfer window closes. If it doesn’t then he may well consider a move to Liverpool.
