Jurgen Klopp will need to replace the departing Alberto Moreno and Daniel Sturridge this summer, according to former Kop striker Neil Mellor.

The duo are set to leave the club when their contracts expire later this month, and Mellor, who helped the Reds lift the Champions League in 2005, believes that reinforcements will be needed at Anfield in their absence.

Speaking to American Gambler, as quoted by the Mirror, Mellor said: “What I would say is that Moreno and Sturridge leaving Liverpool means more coverage needed in those positions.

“A left full-back for Robertson who has been outstanding, and perhaps he may look at depth with Daniel Sturridge leaving as a striker.”

OPINION

Mellor is probably right on this one, but you feel that even if Liverpool were to go without immediate replacements for Sturridge and Moreno, they would manage. Neither player featured particularly regularly last season, and even though they are established first team talents, the fact that their contracts have been allowed to run down should tell you everything you need to know about how much they will be missed. From a pure numbers perspective, new signings would be a good idea, but they would have to be players bought with the express intention of warming the bench every week. Those kind of players can be hard to find, and striking the balance between quality and pragmatism can be a difficult task. Mellor’s advice is solid, but it might be easier said than done. No doubt Jurgen Klopp will have his ideas of who he wants to bring in, but whether he is able to land is targets is another kettle of fish.
