Dean Saunders shared his views regarding Liverpool striker Divock Origi after it was reported that he was set to discuss a new contract with the club.
The Mirror reported on Monday that Liverpool were keen to tie the attacker down to a long-term deal after his heroics in the Champions League final.
The ex-professional footballer believes that the Belgian has made a real impact for the Reds this season, despite often starting on the sidelines in big fixtures.
Saunders claims that the 24-year old has made a huge impact in the Champions League this season, especially against Barcelona and Tottenham.
“He made an impact against Newcastle, massive, Barcelona massive,” said Saunders to talkSPORT (Tuesday 4th June, 06:21).
“He made an impact in the final, great finish he took his goal well,
“I’m not sure there’s not better out there, I think there is,
“He does deserve something for what he’s done, if they give him a contract I’d say well, you earned that.”
OPINION
Although there may be better options out there for Liverpool, there is nothing that should stop the club from offering Origi a new deal, especially after what he has done for the club this season. He has been one of the leading reasons as to why the club have made so much money this season through their Premier League and Champions League campaigns, and the Belgian fully deserves a new and improved contract at Anfield. He’s currently on a wage of £45,000-per week (Source: Spotrac), which isn’t too high considering some of the other big earners at the club, so it wouldn’t be too much to ask for the club to bump his wages up a little bit, and show their appreciation for his services to the club this season. The 24-year old has netted seven times for the Reds in all competitions this season, and stands as the club’s fourth top scorer for the last campaign, despite having limited chances of first team football, only making 21 appearances for the club in all competitions.
