Liverpool youngster Corey Whelan is set to move to Germany, with two Bundesliga clubs interested in his services, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football news outlet claim that Whelan has received great interest after being set for release when his contract runs out at the end of the month.

Football Insider reports that the German clubs will face competition from a number of English football league sides.

The 21-year-old made 27 appearances for the under-23’s side this season and has also earned seven youth international caps for the Republic of Ireland.

Whelan has enjoyed two football league loan spells during his Liverpool career at both Crewe and Yeovil.

OPINION

After Liverpool announced they were set to release Whelan after the youngster was the club for 12 years, it’s no surprise there are clubs involved in a hunt for his signature. The 21-year-old was held in high regard at Anfield throughout his stay, and he also captained the under-23’s side. Despite the positives, Whelan failed to make a senior appearance under Jurgen Klopp, and the German looks to have thought that chances will be very limited for the youngster in years to come. A move elsewhere could benefit Whelan, who should be able to earn more senior experience away from Anfield. With Trent Alexander-Arnold being the Reds main option at right-back, there is literally no chance of a late emergence. The only disappointment surrounding any potential deal will be the fact that it will be a free transfer, the club will have been hoping to receive a fee for the youngster, but will be happy to clear out players that have no potential future under Klopp.
