Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain shared he hoped Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hadn’t jinxed him by suggesting he is like a new signing.

The Reds boss previously described the Liverpool 25-year-old as being a new player for the club this summer after his long-spell on the sidelines injured.

“If Ox can stay fit – new player for us,” he told Liverpool’s official website.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was asked about Klopp’s remarks and cheekily issued an eight-word response to reveal he just hopes his manager hasn’t spoken too soon.

“I just hope he hasn’t spoke too soon,” said Oxlade-Chamberlain, while laughing, on Sky Sports News (11:10am, Sunday, July 21st).

OPINION

Oxlade-Chamberlain may have joked about Klopp potentially jinxing him, but every Liverpool fan likely has their fingers crossed that the 25-year-old can make an impact in his 2019/20 campaign. The 25-year-old only managed two appearances in his 2018/19 campaign, which totalled 19 minutes,  as a serious knee injury kept him rooted to the sidelines. So given that he was barely able to influence the Reds’ bid to win the Premier League last season and played no part in them lifting the Champions League trophy, it’s easy to see why Klopp believes Oxlade-Chamberlain will feel like a new player. When the 25-year-old was fit enough to feature in his 2017/18 campaign, he registered seven assists, scored three goals and achieved an average rating of 6.88 across his 35 league appearances (Source: WhoScored). So if Oxlade-Chamberlain could achieve similar numbers in his upcoming campaign, who knows he may help the Reds win their first Premier League title.
