Liverpool starlet Leighton Clarkson has agreed to a new deal with the club, according to Football Insider.

The 17-year-old creative midfielder is understood to have agreed terms on a new three year professional contract at Anfield, with the teenager believed to have already signed the paperwork on the deal.

Clarkson is yet to make his senior debut for the Reds, but was an integral member of the side that win the FA Youth Cup last season.

OPINION

Clarkson may not be the biggest name in the world, but whose to say that one day he won’t be, and Liverpool are absolutely doing the right thing by tying him down to a new contract as soon as possible. The youngster was involved in 11 goals for the the Reds’ youth teams last season, scoring four and assisting seven more from the centre of the park. That’s not a bad return at all, especially for a talent who tends to play a little deeper in the engine room. U18s coach Barry Lewtas speaks very highly of him, and highlights his technique and his set-piece ability in particular, as quoted by Goal. There will always be room in the game for midfielders who can sit and dictate the tempo of a match from that number six, and after agreeing this deal, if Clarkson plays his cards right, he could be the latest in a long line of academy graduates to make their mark on the senior side.
