Adrian Durham urged Liverpool to wrap Alisson up in cotton wool after watching a clip of Simon Mignolet’s blunder in the 2-2 draw against Sporting Lisbon.

Mignolet allowed the ball to bounce off his hands and into his net after Sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes tried his luck from distance in the Reds’ latest pre-season friendly.

Durham shared a clip of the Belgian’s blunder and suggested the Reds wrap up Alisson in cotton wool as “the curse is spreading”, which appeared to be a dig at previous Reds keeper Loris Karius.

“Wrap Alisson up in cotton wool, the curse is spreading,” wrote Durham via his Twitter account.

OPINION

Durham is probably being sarcastic by being dramatic over Mignolet’s error against Sporting Lisbon, after all the mistake came in a pre-season friendly so the panic stations shouldn’t be mounted. However, it’s clear that the talkSPORT broadcaster has jumped on the opportunity to take a dig at the Reds over their back-up keepers. Karius, who is currently on loan at Besiktas, made several blunders when featuring for Liverpool previously and notably was at fault for two goals in the 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final. So you feel that by Durham stating the curse is spreading, he’s implying that Mignolet is now error-prone just like his loaned-out teammate. Yet considering the Belgian shot-stopper is the Reds’ back-up option for Alisson, the chances of him regularly featuring next season are slim as you feel only an injury problem to Alisson will see him appear. Considering that the Brazilian 26-year-old has only missed a total of five games in his career due to injury, as per Transfermarkt, Durham doesn’t have to worry about him being wrapped up in cotton wool, as it’s not like he’s injury-prone.
