Darren Gough didn’t seem shocked at the idea that Liverpool could be interested in Brazilian defender Dani Alves.

Max Rushden told the talkSPORT pundit that Liverpool were rumoured to be keen on the 36-year-old right-back who is a free agent after leaving Paris Saint Germain.

“Liverpool are rumoured (to be keen on Alves),” said Rushden on talkSPORT (18:42, Monday, July 8th).

This prompted Gough to respond and imply he wasn’t surprised that a club like the Reds could be an option as Alves would want to join a side where he could win something.

“There you go! He’s gonna wanna go somewhere where they win something,” said the former England cricketer.

Former Manchester United midfielder Kleberson previously suggested in an interview with Goal that Alves could fit in well at Anfield as “Klopp would like him as a style of player.”

OPINION

Rushden directly stated Liverpool were rumoured to be keen on Alves, but aside from Kleberson linking the 36-year-old to Anfield; has there been any real talk about him? Maybe the radio host knows something others don’t or has just jumped the gun. However, given that Alves is a free agent and a serial winner, it wouldn’t be the worse signing Klopp could make this summer. The 36-year-old played 37 times for club and country during his 2018/19 campaign, achieving an average match rating of 7.14 (Source: WhoScored). Alves scored four goals, assisted seven and averaged 1.2 shots per game so he would be an attack-minded full-back who could provide excellent cover for current first-choice left-back Andy Robertson. However while the experienced defender does seem ideal on paper, would he really join a side to be back-up? Alves, who has won the Champions League three times in his career, would no doubt only want a move where he’d be first-choice and that wouldn’t be the case if he joined Liverpool.
