Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia shared that he has been impressed by Rhian Brewster during pre-season in a recent interview.

The 45-year-old was asked if any of the Reds’ youngsters had stood out for him during the pre-season tour with a handful being given chances due to players such as Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino still being on holiday, and Hyypia proceeded to highlight Brewster.

Hyypia stated that the teenage forward had shown he was a natural goalscorer by scoring four goals in his first three games, as a result, had stood out for him.

“I agree that it’s been a great opportunity for the younger players to get on the field in front of the big crowds with the senior players, and hopefully one or two of them will have made a case for themselves to get involved with the first team,” said Hyypia in an interview with Liverpool Offside.

“Rhian Brewster, in particular, showed that he is a natural goal scorer with four goals in his first three games. He stood out for me in these games.”

OPINION

Brewster has stood out for all the right reasons in pre-season and it’s no surprise that Hyypia opted to highlight the 19-year-old as a result. The Reds youngster no doubt has his eye on breaking into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team plans this season, he has never featured for the senior side in a competitive game thus far in his career, and is making sure to impress when handed a chance. Brewster had an incredibly frustrating 2018/19 campaign as he managed only two appearances for the Reds’ U-23s in the Premier League 2 due to an ankle injury. The teenager injured his ankle in January 2018 and ended up spending 440 days on the sidelines, as per Transfermarkt, and as a result, he is probably hungry to get back to scoring goals. Brewster, when fit in his 2017/18 campaign, was in prolific form as he scored six goals, while assisting seven, across the 15 appearances he made for the Reds’ youth sides. If Brewster could replicate his form for the club’s youth sides, as well as the form he is showing in pre-season, then he’s bound to be an asset to the first-team in his upcoming campaign.
