AC Milan hav ended their interest in Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian giants had been credited with a serious interest in the 6’2″ World Cup finalist [Transfermarkt] earlier in the summer, as reported by Football Insider.

But it is now understood that their pursuit has come to an end, with other targets now higher on the agenda for the Serie A club.

OPINION

This could be a really good thing for Liverpool. Dejan Lovren doesn’t always get a lot of love on Merseyside, but you will struggle to find a covering centre back with as much quality and pedigree as he has. The Croatian definitely has a mistake in him, no doubt, but on his day he is as good as any defender in the Premier League. Last year season he 1.2 tackles and 3.9 clearances per game in the top flight, as per Whoscored, and it’s clear that he can still be called upon as a dependable and experienced defensive option. Selling him wouldn’t have been a disaster, granted, but keeping hold of him could prove to be a real blessing in disguise. This way, Jurgen Klopp gets to ensure he has depth at the back, without having to worry about finding a new player to replace Lovren. Nobody is saying he should play every week, but this is a tidy little win for the Reds.
