Mills: Wilson could get frustrated at Liverpool

|

Harry Wilson could get frustrated by a lack of first team opportunities  at Liverpool next season, according to Danny Mills.

The Welsh international spent last term on loan at Derby County to great effect, hitting 16 goals for the Rams.

But Sky Sports pundit Mills has suggested that the winger could be unhappy on Merseyside next year.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I think he’s a player of quality. It will be interesting to see whether Harry Wilson can break into the Liverpool squad of 25. That’s not going to be easy with Liverpool having an abundance of talent in those areas.

“It’s whether, is he best to sit on the bench at Liverpool bearing in mind the players you’ve got that aren’t going to be guaranteed starters. Breaking in is going to be difficult.

“Once a player has had first-team football regularly, they don’t really want to drop back to getting a handful of appearances at best off the bench.”

OPINION

Mills makes a very astute point here. The fact of the matter is that Wilson has grown accustomed to playing every week, and his performances with Derby last year would, ordinarily, be enough to earn him a place in the match day squad for his parent club. The Welsh international had 2.6 shots on goal per match in the Championship last season, and was dispossessed an average of just 0.7 times per game [Whoscored]. But Liverpool are not like other sides. The standard required to be successful at Anfield is so high these days, and the competition is so fierce, that only the absolute best of the best can make it. Whether Wilson is at that level is hard to say, and if there is any doubt over whether or not he will feature regularly then it would surely be wise to let him go out on loan again this coming season.
