Liverpool have beaten Arsenal and Manchester City in the race to sign Fulham youngster Harvey Elliott, according to Goal.

The news outlet claims that Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have also made enquiries about the 16-year-old attacker who Liverpool are now set to sign from Fulham.

It is understood that Elliott is a boyhood Reds fan and was “desperate” to make the move to Merseyside after a breakthrough season at Craven Cottage in which he became the Premier League’s youngest-ever player.

Goal adds that the deal that takes Elliott to Anfield is expected to be complete in the coming days and it remains to be seen what kind of role he will play in Jurgen Klopp’s team due to his tender age.

OPINION

Although it is reported that Liverpool will have to pay Fulham a compensation fee for Elliott, there are few reasons to say that this would be a bad piece of business for the European champions. Elliott is the latest youngster to come through a Fulham academy that has done well at producing young English talent in recent years. Ryan and Stephen Sessegnon, Patrick Roberts and Moussa Dembele are all players who have been developed by Fulham to some degree in the early years of their careers while Elliott is among one the most highly-rated of the current crop of youngsters at the Thameside club. As Liverpool have beaten some of the top clubs in Europe to signing Elliott, it just shows how much potential this youngster has. He made two league appearances for Fulham last season to break the Premier League’s record for the youngest player. Hopefully he can have a better career than the previous player who held that record, Matthew Briggs, who now plays non-league football at the age of 28.
